This specialized workshop is designed for interpreters who work in or are preparing to work in settings related to Immigration and Refugee Law and law enforcement, such as the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and the Immigration and Refugee Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The session will focus on enhancing terminology and terminology research skills, understanding critical protocols, and the dynamic interactions between these various agencies. Archana Chauhan, an accredited Punjabi/Hindi/Urdu interpreter with the IRB, brings extensive experience from her work in legal and law enforcement settings across British Columbia and Alberta. Archana will guide participants through the complexities of IRB, CBSA, and IRCC communications, introduce you to the unique terminology used in these fields, and explain the procedural nuances through a blend of presentations, practical activities, and discussions designed to deepen your understanding. You will also develop the research skills needed to build comprehensive glossaries and effectively navigate complex interactions.

Archana Chauhan is a distinguished Accredited IRB Interpreter with over 15 years of extensive experience in legal and court settings across British Columbia and Alberta. Throughout her career, Archana has collaborated closely with justices and other pivotal stakeholders within the judicial system, passionately advocating for enhanced access to justice through superior language services and the equitable compensation of interpreters.

In addition to her interpreting work, Archana is a dedicated instructor and a bilingual mentor. She provides comprehensive coaching to both novice and experienced interpreters, aiming to elevate their linguistic abilities and interpreting proficiency. Archana’s commitment to the development of interpreting skills is further evidenced by her role as an instructor at The Interpreter’s Lab (TIL), where she imparts her knowledge and expertise to a new generation of language professionals.
