Interpreting in Mental Health Settings

Prepare for the unique challenges and rewards of a career in mental health care interpreting.

Mental health care settings offer, without a doubt, some of the most complex and arduous work for interpreters. The sensitive and often stigma-laden nature of mental health care calls for a high level of understanding and judgment-free respect for not only all involved parties but also for all the culturally nuanced taboos and beliefs about the causes and permutations of mental illness.

This training program is designed for advanced interpreters looking to expand into more challenging areas of their profession. In addition to providing training for mental health care interpreting work, it also offers preparation for work in other demanding and complex care settings including gerontology (elder care), speech-language pathology and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). It’s best suited to interpreters who already have work experience in interpreting in healthcare settings.

Students must successfully complete our Healthcare & Medical Settings Training Program prior to starting the Interpreting in Mental Health Settings Training Program.
