This short-course is an intensive introduction to working in legal settings and the Canadian court system. It will provide students with a foundation to get them working in diverse legal settings such as the courtroom, tribunals, local police and RCMP settings – as well as Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) offices.

Course Title: Interpreting in Legal and Court Settings

Length: 45 hours – Option for Bilingual Tutorial Sessions – Interpreting in Community Settings is a prerequisite

Format: This course is now being offered online via remote classroom learning. The course is comprised of 10 sessions in an online classroom with the instructor and others students, and a series of online modules and assignments that students complete in their own time. Students have access to the online modules for 3 months from the start date of the course.

  • Preparation strategies for court and legal settings
  • Legal language and terminology
  • Sight Translation in Legal Settings
  • Consecutive Interpreting in Legal Settings
  • Ethics and standards of professional practice for court and legal interpreters
  • Continued competence and research skills Additional Bilingual tutorials are also available and include:

  • Simultaneous Interpreting in Legal Settings The Core Course will include an introduction to:
