Session Overview

This specialized workshop is tailored for interpreters that work in healthcare and medical settings that are focused on enhancing their proficiency in oncology, particularly gynaecological oncology. The session will equip you with essential insights into daily clinical operations, patient interaction techniques, and the critical role of interpreters in oncological settings.

Dr. Andrea Cheung is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Gynaecologic Oncology at the University of British Columbia and a practicing clinician with the BC Cancer Centre and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Dr Cheung will lead the initial portion of the workshop, introduce you to the unique medical terminology and patient intake process through a blend of presentations, practical activities, and discussions designed to deepen your understanding. You will also develop the research skills to enable you to build comprehensive glossaries and effectively navigate complex medical dialogues.

Participants will learn specific oncology and gynecology terminology, enhancing their ability to communicate accurately and effectively in medical settings. Through engaging in terminology matching exercises and scenario-based role-playing, interpreters will grow their confidence and become more adept at handling the nuances of medical interpretation.

This session aims to empower interpreters to improve communication between patients and healthcare providers, ultimately enhancing patient care in gynaecological oncology. Interpreters will leave the workshop better prepared and confident to work in these demanding and sensitive environments.

6. Be able to better understand the goals of the intake process, and patient needs to facilitate their own contextual awareness and competence in these settings. 
7. Understand the use of glossaries and research techniques to stay updated with medical jargon.
8. Have gained the confidence to interact proficiently with healthcare professionals and patients, ensuring accurate and empathetic communication.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Dr. Andrea Cheung

Facilitator: Dr. Andrea Cheung, GPO, BC Cancer – Vancouver Dr. Andrea Cheung has been working as a GPO with the Gynecologic Oncology Tumour Group at BC Cancer – Vancouver since 2011 in outpatient, inpatient and procedural settings. 

Dr. Cheung did her undergraduate training and Family Medicine residency at the University of Toronto and worked as a rural and urban locum before joining BC Cancer. Dr. Cheung is also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Gynecologic Oncology with UBC’s Faculty of Medicine. 

Dr. Cheung works daily with interpreters.

Young Joe

Young Joe was the first in Canada to become a Certified Medical Interpreter, having successfully completed her CTTIC examination during the initial phase of the designation. Young Joe is also a respected interpreter and interpreter trainer in British Columbia.

Her extensive experience spans the healthcare sector, including both hospital and community settings. Young Joe holds two master’s degrees from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia—one in Interpreting and Translation and another in International Relations. Her exceptional interpersonal and teaching skills have made her a sought-after speaker and presenter.

Young has been an instructor with TIL since 2015 and also teaches at SFU.
