The session will equip you with essential insights into daily clinical operations, patient interaction techniques, and the critical role of interpreters in oncological settings.\nDr. Andrea Cheung is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Gynaecologic Oncology at the University of British Columbia and a practicing clinician with the BC Cancer Centre and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Dr Cheung will lead the initial portion of the workshop, introduce you to the unique medical terminology and patient intake process through a blend of presentations, practical activities, and discussions designed to deepen your understanding. You will also develop the research skills to enable you to build comprehensive glossaries and effectively navigate complex medical dialogues.\nParticipants will learn specific oncology and gynecology terminology, enhancing their ability to communicate accurately and effectively in medical settings. Through engaging in terminology matching exercises and scenario-based role-playing, interpreters will grow their confidence and become more adept at handling the nuances of medical interpretation.\nThis session aims to empower interpreters to improve communication between patients and healthcare providers, ultimately enhancing patient care in gynaecological oncology. Dr. Cheung is also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Gynecologic Oncology with UBC’s Faculty of Medicine. \nDr. Cheung works daily with interpreters. \n“I, on the whole, think that [Interpreter] services are just excellent. And we couldn’t really do our jobs without you.” \nDr. Andrea Cheung\nYoung Joe\nYoung Joe was the first in Canada to become a Certified Medical Interpreter, having successfully completed her CTTIC examination during the initial phase of the designation. Young Joe is also a respected interpreter and interpreter trainer in British Columbia.\nHer extensive experience spans the healthcare sector, including both hospital and community settings. Young Joe holds two master’s degrees from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia—one in Interpreting and Translation and another in International Relations. Her exceptional interpersonal and teaching skills have made her a sought-after speaker and presenter.\nYoung has been an instructor with TIL since 2015 and also teaches at SFU.\n \nThe Interpreter’s Lab – Policy on Attendance and Certificates\nParticipants must be online, and visible, with their name visible (ensure your name is correctly spelled upon signing in) during the session.
